History
Since it’s founding
in 1984 this club has been marked by amazing
growth brought about by the dedication and energy
of its members.
The idea of a yacht club
was first discussed in 1983 by Founding Commodore,
Walter Decker. The following year the club was
officially registered with the American Yacht
Clubs as the Captiva Island Yacht Club.
In the fall of 1984 a plan
was developed to build the club by recruiting
18 charter members from all area of Captiva.
By March of 1985, as a result of the efforts
of these charter members, the membership numbered
80 and at that time a limit of 100 was established.
Thanks to Lloyd Wright of
Tween Waters Inn, a 3 year lease was negotiated
to use a small building on the northeast corner
of their property know as the Canoe Club.
The Board of Directors acquired
the property directly north of the existing
clubhouse. Construction was started in December
of 1987 and The Club was officially opened in
October 1988.
In March 1991 the club submitted
an application for admission to the Florida
Council of Yacht Clubs. The Florida Council
officially inducted the Captiva Island Yacht
Club into its membership in September 1994.
